Last year saw the appearance of a new society on the landscape and this month, it is holding its inaugural conference: one not to miss!

In September 2013, researchers from Europe, Australasia and North America launched the Society for One-Place Studies. A worldwide community where family and local history unite, its membership hit ‘two score and ten’ within weeks and the dedicated founders have developed innovative collaborative projects along with a plethora of society benefits and educational opportunities to ensure continued membership growth.

During 2014, Society members have been working on ‘A Shared Endeavour’ based on the centenary of World War One and its impact on members’ study communities. The conference is based on the same theme and has attracted several high quality speakers; military historian Phil Tomaselli, author of numerous publications for Pen & Sword Books; Kate Tiller, author of Remembrance and Community: war memorials and local history (British Association for Local History, 2013); and three members of the Society - Kim Baldacchino, Janet Few and Simon Last.

The Society for One-Place Studies is a global, active community of local and family historians and as such, it is important to the society to make the conference open to a worldwide audience. Sponsorship has been secured so that the event can be livestreamed and available on YouTube for viewers in any country. The event will be held at Telford Innovation Conference Centre, part of the University of Wolverhampton, on Saturday 25 October 2014. It is open to members and non-members alike with varying registration rates (see here ).

Anyone is welcome to attend the day conference (from 10am to 4:30pm BST) and the delegate packs will be extremely well-stocked with over £25 worth of goodies, provided by Discover Your Ancestors and Pen & Sword Books. Members work will be displayed and several local and family history stand holders have already committed to attend, including CAB Search and the British Association for Local History.

Many members and stall holders will be staying in Telford on Friday 24 October and meeting to network prior to the event.
