On 11 September 1878, the Woolwich correspondent for the Pall Mall Gazette sent a sombre despatch:

Woolwich, Wednesday, 11 AM – The Burman family were buried this morning—father, mother, and three children… The total number of bodies brought to the Dockyard in the last twenty-four hours is sixteen, one of which was caught by a policeman as it floated under the Dockyard jetty.
